ST DAVID'S HOSPICE SAHARA DESERT TREK
Emily Carr & Sarah Corkish-Brown
My Story
Mandy Carr was my Mum and Sarah's sister. A gorgeous, funny, kind woman who absolutely lit up any room she walked in. A loving Mum, daughter, sister, granny and aunt.
In 2015 she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer after finding a swelling in her left boob where she went through radical chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In 2020, the day after lockdown, we discovered that the cancer had spread to her sternum, spine and liver. She started weekly chemotherapy at the North Wales Cancer Centre during lockdown. We spent those months barely surviving but finding glimmers of hope sat in the back garden playing scrabble when she was well enough, her being mad at me for making her sit in the shade due to chemo when she was an absolute sun lover.
In 2021, the cancer had spread to her brain, too. Throughout all the treatment, all the agonising side effects, she remained positive and had a real zest for life. In January 2024, her quality of life had greatly reduced, her mobility was worsening and she was becoming more and more confused. She made the decision that she did not want to continue with any type of treatment anymore, she had had enough and she was ready to die. We cared for her at home for as long as possible, with the palliative care team and district nurse input along with supportive and hilarious carers who really lifted her spirits up.
She went in to St David's Hospice in Llandudno at the beginning of May 2024. As a whole family we were treated with so much love, compassion and care. She took her last breath on the 23rd May 2024 with myself, my brother and Sarah around her.
She had one wish - to die without pain. The staff ensured that she was comfortable and pain free right up until the very end.
We owe the dignity in Mum's death to St David's Hospice - in the end all we want is our loved ones to pass peacefully.
